How to read your Human Design Chart (Part 1)

When I first looked at my Human Design Chart, also known as a BodyGraph I had no idea what any of it meant.

The lines, shapes, symbols and numbers on the screen were confusing and truth be told, I was a little overwhelmed and ready to close down my internet browser and get on with my day…..and that would have been a big mistake!

Although Human Design is somewhat of a complicated system, it is well worth taking the time to understand it or at the very least to understand YOUR design. Why? Because the systems talks about YOU! Time spent understanding yourself is never wasted.

So, let me help you unpack the basic components of your chart, so that you can get started on your own exciting Human Design Journey.

THE 9 ENERGY CENTRES

The larger shapes on your chart, represent the 9 energy centres. These form form the foundations of your chart, they also align with the ChakrasFrom the top we have:

  • The Crown/Head

  • The Mind/Ajna

  • The Throat

  • The G-Centre/The Self

  • The Heart/Ego

  • The Solar Plexus/ Emotions

  • The Sacral

  • The Root

  • The Spleen

Each of the centres has a way of assimilating, processing and directing energy and each centre also relates to a different human function.

The energy centres have the incredible ability to communicate with the energy around us, we are in constant communication with other people’s energy fields and with the giant energy field that is the Universe (even when we don’t realise it)

I like to think about it this way: Think about the impact the Moon has on the tides. The energetic push and pull, has the ability to quite literally change oceans on earth. We don’t visibly see the process happening, but we can see the results.

COLOURED SHAPES VS WHITE SHAPES

When one of the 9 energy centres in your chart is coloured in it is referred to as being ‘defined’.

A defined centre means that you have consistent access to the energy of that centre and a consistent approach to the function the energy centre relates to.

When the Centre is not coloured in, this is referred to as being ‘undefined’.

Un undefined centre, doesn't provide you with consistent access to that energy. The centre is ‘open’ and therefore susceptible to other people’s energy and influence.

Example: If I have a defined Sacral, I have consistent access to life force energy, ready to take action and ‘do the work’ at any given time.

If someone has an undefined Sacral, they don’t have consistent access to life force energy, their energy will come and go depending on who they are with. Their open centre allows them to essentially ‘feed’ off of other people’s energy. But when they are not in contact with others, they might find that they need more rest and time to sit back and relax.

THE 36 CHANNELS

The channels are the lines that run through your chart, connecting the energy centres to others.

Your channels can be coloured in or they can be white.

If they are fully coloured in from start to finish, this means that the channel is active. If they are partly coloured in or not coloured in, this means that the channel is inactive.

You will also note that when the channels are coloured in, they can be coloured in with two different colours - this difference is important. When the channel is coloured in black, this represents your Conscious Personality, when the channel is coloured in Red (or whichever other colour the website you used has opted for) this represents your unconscious design.

THE 64 GATES

The 64 gates correspond to the 64 Codons in the Human DNA and the 64 hexagrams of the Chinese I-Ching.

When they are coloured in, the Gate is active. When they are not coloured in the Gate is inactive.

When 2 gates at either side of a channel are both active, the channel itself will become active. I like to think of them as 2 doors at either end of a tunnel, that can either be open or closed, when both doors are open they allow energy to flow through the tunnel freely.

DESIGN Vs PERSONALITY

The two columns at their side of your chart show you your Design (Unconscious) - which is based on the energetic blueprint present exactly 3 months (88 days) prior to your birth and your Personality (Conscious) - based on the energetic blueprint present at the exact time of your birth.

You are likely to find that when learning about your chart and about yourself, you will resonate more with your Personality than with your Design. This is because we tend to be more aware of our personality traits, whereas, we are often not familiar with our design (although, people around us might be as a result of those traits manifesting in your day to day life).
